Tape Library - Extend Expired Tapes

$

Hi,

I have several questions regarding the Tape Library behavior.

I have DPM 2012 R2 UR3 with VTL library. I have several PG that is using Long-Term-backup to the VTL. I have several protection Groups that is having long term backup. Each PG have its own Library with several tapes presented. The schema is 1 month kept for 12 months and 1 year kept in 5 years. my questions are:-

1. Is it possible to extend tapes expiration date? For example changing the 1 month to be kept for 10 years?

i read this thread https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bf5115d4-a050-4aca-9759-8180c415d415/how-can-i-change-tape-expiry?forum=dpmtapebackuprecovery and Mike wrote

"

•Expiry dates for valid datasets that are already written to tape are changed when the retention range is changed during a protection group modification.

To change the behavior create the IsDatasetExpiryDateChangeInModifyPgAllowed DWORD value under the following registry key, and then set its value data to 0:
   HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Configuration\MediaManager

"

Does that means if i add "IsDatasetExpiryDateChangeInModifyPgAllowed " and change the Protection Group retention range will that change the expire date for all tapes in the library?

2. If i present a new Library to each Long-term PG and kept the old library presented in DPM Library. Will the tapes still be usable even if they will expire? the idea behind that is keeping each library and its containing tapes untouchable for like 10 years and when the tape expires i will mark them as free (contain data) and recategorize the tape. in that way i can still use the tapes for a specific amount of time.

thanks in advance,

Laith

DPM 2012 R2 - Memory usage climbs during Express Backup and is not cleared when jobs are completed - server performance crawls until reboot

$

0

DPM 2012 R2 Rollup 3 on Windows 2012 R2.
12GB RAM.
Pagefile 110GB.
29TB allocated (according to DPM protection group)
37TB used (according to DPM management summary).
42TB Storage total.
91 days protection VMs in Cluster + weekly copy to tape. On wire compression enabled.
5 days protection applications (SQL/Exchange 2010). On wire compression disabled.
Both PG: Sync just before Recovery point. Express full backup once daily.

Hi. I'm having a problem with memory consumption in Windows when DPM is backing up members.

It appears that express full backups consume RAM as each member is backed up but the memory is not released and so, as each member is synch'd, the RAM consumption climbs over the hours until it hits about 95%-97% and system runs very slowly. The job runs on interminably and the whole process effectively stalls (but not actually, just very slow) until I reboot.
I can't free that shared memory back up. Restarting SQL & DPM services makes no difference.
In Task Manager the Processes Memory Usage hits 97% when the issue is worst but the actual processes (DPM & SQL) only display 100-400MB of use. However, the RAMMAP utility shows that the bulk of RAM (maybe 10GB) is consumed under the heading Shareable Memory.

I guess it might be related to the Dynamic Volumes in disk manager or VHD(X)s being mounted or maybe even the network access during synchronisation.

The replication to tape causes no issue and memory usage is low during the copy to tape (which takes maybe 8 hours) and freed up when completed.

I have read about known issues regarding SMB2/3 and VHDXs but I appear to have the approriate KB patches installed already.

FYI: I also have other issues on this server.
The external storage controller is resetting itself periodically but intermittenly failing to recover and so disks disappear from disk manager and backups fail.
Also, after the PGs term of protection expires, old recovery points are not being flushed/cleared/deleted and so I have to do this manually with a custom powershell script (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/fa700e75-de4f-4d11-89a7-d80c07406941/dpm-2012-r2-returned-tapes-with-expired-data-not-freeing-up-not-showing-as-expired?forum=dpmtapebackuprecovery#e5bdca77-e758-4542-85cc-0d49281d39a2). Incidentally, running this powershell script - which queries DPM for recovery points older than 91 days and deletes them using DPM powershell commands - also appears to induce the 'hogging and failing to release memory' issue.

Tape List missing necessary tape

I have two separate protection groups - System State Protection Group and Default Protection Group.

We rotate between 3 separate drives - Firestreamer is used to emulate tape.

Disk 2 and 3 are currently in the library, but Disk 3 isn't assigned to the protection group "Default Protection Group", it is only assigned System State Protection.

Naturally - long term backup jobs failed and DPM is asking me to add a free tape - I can't mark Disk 3 as free because it is assigned to "System State Protection Group"

My question is - how would I go about assigning Disk 3 to both System State Protection and Default Protection Group?

Tape drive stuck in use

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help. I'm using DPM 2010 with a MSL2024 G3 tape library. Yesterday there was a tape stuck in the drive on the tape library which was removed from the drive using the option on the library's front console to remove the tape from drive.

When I checked the drive status in DPM today I realised that the drive still says its in use, and that the tape is unknown and the bar code is unreadable.

I have ran diagnostics on the tape library and everything seems healthy. I've restarted both the tape library and the server running DPM.

I found a post here about checking the drive status in SQL

SQL_TABLE_NAME     COLUMN_HEADING         DESIRED     value meaning
===============  =================  ========  ============
dbo-tbl_MM_TapeDrive  DriveStatus              0                0=none 1=Need scleaning 2=Needs Servicing

dbo.tbl_MM_Glogal_Drive ReservationLevel      0                0=none 1 or 2 = reserved by some task.

dbo.tbl_MM_Drive OperationOccuring             0                0=none >0=operation in progress

and there was an entry under dbo.tbl_MM_Drive that had OperationOccuring set to 1. I tried returning it to 0 but it did not make any difference (I have since set it back to 1).

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks in advance!

DPM 2012 R2 IBM TS3200 3573, 2 drive dismount problem

Hi,

we have DPM2012 R2 RU3 on win 2012 R2 and IBM TS3200 3573, 2 drives. Problem is that after backup job finishe, tape stays in a drive and i have to dismount it manualy. Does somene use the same tape library sucesfully, and what driver?

we tried newest drivers and firmware, but with no luck. I thing it is a driver problem, but don't know wich driver to use.

DPM Question - Need to find a method to archive all our short-term recovery points to tape.

$

Components involved:  DPM 2012 R2, 80TB drive array, and a 2-LTO6 tape library.  Roughly 20TB of data to protect, recovery points run once a week.

======================================================

We’re in a bit of a quandary with our “long term” recovery points.   The third-party software we were using for this has failed and I’m trying to figure out a way to back up all our existing recovery points to tape before they prune out.

(For your reference the 3rd-party software was a “DPM enhancement” package.  It presented itself to the DPM server as a tape drive where you configure your long-term backups to.  As the job runs, the software compresses and deduplicates the data, in the process removing the 64-version file limit of DPM.  We have given this application 40TB of disk space to use for this purpose. I’ve been working with their support team on options to export the protected data stored there.)

But there may be a method to bypass the 3rd party software entirely and eliminate it from this process, using only the data in DPM and the existing short-term storage.

The only method I’m aware of is cumbersome-- to manually “restore to tape” every recovery point on each individual server.  This would take a long time to execute and would go through an unknown amount of tapes (though not so many if we are able to combine tapes per protected server or protection group.)

I’m hoping we're not the only company to have faced this issue and that someone has experience in handling it.  If there was an automated method or script we could run that would take a lot of the manual processes out, recovering these points to tape may be a very viable answer.

ANY ideas/suggestions/recommended courses of action would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Removing All tapes from DPM Database

$

Hi,

We seem to be stuck in a situation where during our backups, some tapes are being marked as expired, and not being used for the backup, despite them being marked as Free before use.

We don't use DPM's tape availability features (far too confusing) and instead log the incremental tape numbers in a journal, so we know which tapes have been used.

I'd like to know if it's possible, and if so how do we go about removing all tapes from the DPM database.

That way we can start with Tape 1 again for our next full backup.

I've seen SQL scripts which will remove single tapes, but I'd like to remove all the tapes en-masse if possible.

Many thanks,

Martin Robson.

Free tape stuck as offsite ready?

I have a tape that’s marked as “offsite ready” despite the fact that I “marked it as free” and subsequently erased it.

It does not show up as belonging to any protection group and a detailed inventory on the tape doesn’t appear to change its status.

It also does not show up in the tape management report as a tape ready for offsite despite being marked as such in the console.

Any help in rectifying this?

Thanks

Hi All,

I am facing a problem when DPM2012 erase the media.

Current System:-

Operating System : Windows Server 2012 R2

DPM Version : 2012 R2 version 4.2.1273

Tape Library : DELL PV 124T LTO-6

Auto Loader version : V90.0 (005A.0h)

Drive Version : D8E3

I had execute a command to force-free the tape then erase the media, it took me very long and without showing any progress running. In tape library it is showing writing but there is no progress. Until I had rebooted both and run inventory it show the tape available. Can I know is it hardware causing or the software causing ?

Does DPM have a tape error or general health check function?

$

Good afternoon,

We are currently using DPM 2007 with plans to upgrade to 2012 once our new environment has been built. One issue that has been brought up is that the majority of our LTO-3 tapes are older than anyone can remember, at least 6+ years. We're thinking of introducing a process whereby old tapes are proactively replaced before they can fail.

We also use Backup Exec, which has detailed stats for each tape, specifically it can show how many read/write errors the tape is getting. When this number starts to peak we will know it's time for the tape to be retired. Is there any such function in newer versions of DPM?

Any help here would be much appreciated.  The issue seems to have started when I started loading drivers into Device Manager to get the Quantum Superloader to be recognized as the Medium Changer, and the HP Ultrium as the tape drive.  They both show up once in Device Manager.   Even when removing these devices and doing a rescan in DPM 2010, the error still presents.  I am unable to get past this.  Any help would be much appreciated.

EDIT: The tape library and tape drive both show up once in DPM 2010 as well.

Thanks.

Problem: DPM could not reserve the drive resource because one of required drive resources is not online or it needs cleaning or servicing. (ID 24052)

Hi,

Is there any way I can get around this problem (see notes below)?

Here is the problem I am having:

Type:     Dataset copy

Status:  Failed

Description:        DPM could not reserve the drive resource because one of required drive resources is not online or it needs cleaning or servicing. (ID 24052)

Here is why it is happening (Background)

Supported and unsupported scenarios in DPM

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn554221.aspx

Multiple long-term tape goals that use dataset-copy jobs fail if you only have a single tape drive

Issue: DPM doesn’t support multiple long-term backup goals if you only have a single tape drive.

Workaround: Add a second tape drive to DPM or to the tape library.

Notes:

  • I have verified that the option for the number of tape copies is not greater than 1 for any protection goal in any of the 3 protection groups.
  • I do have multiple long-term backup goals, and I only have a single tape drive.  I don’t want to add a second tape drive to DPM or to the tape library.  I think this is a ridiculous solution.  I was thinking of creating two types of backup jobs for ones for short term backups and for one larger job long term backups (weekly and monthly).
  • The tape backups complete, just the "Dataset copy" doesn't happen.

Environment:

  • Windows Server 2012
  • SCDPM 2012 R2
  • Tape backup library, with one drive.

Tape jobs will not resume

I have a tape job that has failed in DPM 2012. I restart or resume the job and I see it in activity monitor but it is not writing to tape. I have free tape in the library.
