DPM Job Waiting for Tape

Hi all, i have a question:

I have to make a full backup to LTO, and figure this message:

This is the IT infraestructure:

  • DPM 2016
  • IBM TS3200 Tape Library

I went to the protection group on DPM, and did a "Create a recovery point" (long term protection). The job start, and write on LTO:

After a hours, the job is paused becaue it need a new tape (its a big shared folder), and figure this message and event when i try to continue the job:

"Copy job is paused because the required tape Free Tape is not available in the library Stand Alone Drive Tape Library IBM ULT3580-HH6 SCSI Sequential Device. (ID 3315)"

"Insert the tape with label Free Tape in the library through the I/E port or by unlocking the library door. Click "Continue Job" in the Details section of this alert, if you add the required tape without using the Add tape (I/E port) or Unlock Door actions on the Library tab in the Management task area."

Status: Active
Stand Alone Drive Tape Library : IBM ULT3580-HH6 SCSI Sequential Device
Description: Job requires tape that is not available in the library (ID: 3315)

This is the library resume:

Why show this message, if the backup is to the LTO, an not to the Stand-alone drive?

Must i unlock it?

Thanks¡¡

Does the DB retain catalogs of Expired tapes?

We have a tape retention policy of 6 months but we have tapes that have reached that expiry but have not been overwritten.

Is there a way of finding out which job has written to which tape so we can restore items longer than the 6 month period?

I know how to recatalog the tape but I need ot know which tape has the data I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Remove Tape Library from DPM

I'm in the process of decommissioning a tape library and was hoping to get some guidance. I have ensured that no data is stored on the library (all tapes are marked as free) and that no jobs are trying to use it (it has been disabled for two weeks) and I'm now to the point of physically removing the device. However, I don't see any obvious was either through the admin console or through PowerShell to remove it from the configuration. Is there something that I need to do? The server connects to the library via iSCSI if that matters.

DPM Recovery Point to tape failed

Hi all, let me tell you my problem: the Backup infrastructure is:

  • System Center 2016 DPM (Windows Server 2016)
  • IBM TS3200 Tape Library

Once a month, we must to download a backup to a Tape, to save it in another location.

The procedure is: Protection Group - Create Recovery Point - Long Term tape Protection. The task start, but fail after few minutes:

In the DPM console, the library shows (and if i want to clean, appear the message):

In the IBM admin console, the clean drive shows "No Cleaning Required"

  • I restarted the bkp server and the library.
  • In computer managemet, the device is correctly listed:

The past month the task was executed correctly (was my firts time)

In the middle, we must to move both server from one rack to another. (the library is connected through SAS port)

Some suggestion please?

Thanks in advanced.

Step 2.
Disable TCP Chimney on both DPM server and protected Server by running this command
Netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled

I would appreciate any help in this matter.

Thanks.

DPM migration and import backup from the Type in new environment

Hello everyone,

In near future, we will migrate our DPM instance, but actually we need to launch new DPM instance in our new domain (because cross-domain migration is not possible).

Coming back to the topic - after that migration, I want to be able to read and import data written on cartridges, obviously before the migration period.

From the DPM perspective, are there any recommendation/concerns/.. ?

Best regards
AErot

force mark tape as free doesn't work

Hi @ all,

I am using powershell for forcing tapes as free which are belonging to a single tape drive.

Here is the script:

$LIB = Get-DPMLibrary -DPMServerName server
$TP1 = Get-Tape -DPMLibrary $LIB foreach ($rp in @(Get-RecoveryPoint -Tape $TP1)) { Get-RecoveryPoint -Datasource $rp.Datasource | Out-Null Write-Verbose "Removing recovery point created at $($rp.RepresentedPointInTime) for tape." Remove-RecoveryPoint -RecoveryPoint $rp -ForceDeletion -Confirm:$false } Write-Verbose "Setting tape as free." Set-Tape -Tape $TP1 -Free

After running the script it throws an error which indicates, that recoverypoints can't be removed because they still belong to a protection group. Error ID: 31116

Any hints?

Cheers,

André

Can't copy from tape to disk.

Hello,

Anyone else having issues where copying data from tape to disk causes the console to crash and thus the job never to execute?

Error ID: 917 "Restarting Administrator Console"

I have some tapes that were created in DPM 1807 and had tape verification done at the time of backup. DPM 1807 crashed because of the fantastic unsolvable bug with ReFS which microsoft has no fix for.

Installed DPM 2019 tried to restore from tape and the console crashes. Restore is unsuccessful. Even tapes that I just finished creating a few minutes ago in DPM 2019 cause the console to crash whenever I try to copy from them to disk.

Have a ticket open with Microsoft but I might as well just ask the guy walkin down the street to help me fix it because we could achieve the same level of progress.

Thank You

Installed on Server Standard 2019, Physical Machine, with tons of RAM and tons of CPU, and nothing else running on it.

Is there a way to disable tape libray fast inventory jobs during other tape operations

$

This is a minor nuisance - I am asking since I have tape libraries which will eventually run several days to keep up with monthly tape backups and raise the error every day since fast inventory cant be performed while a tape backup is in progress. I figure a registry key could be queried to look at a "tapelibraryfastinventory" 0 always run 1 only run when tape library is not busy or a way to skip fast inventory i.e. for the first 2 days in the month - since rescheduling doesn't help since the libraries run 24/7 during the monthly backup cycle.

DPM 1801 - External DPM Tapes disappears after closing console

Dear folks,

we are trying to upgrade a DPM2010 system to DPM v. 1801

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to import the old database information, so we decided we will have to make do with losing disk protection.

However, we would like all the old tape backups to still be available in the console. Hence, on the test system, we imported a few tapes and recataloged them.

Now the data shows under "External DPM tapes". Recovery works. Fine.

However, when closing the console, "External dpm tapes" does no longer show when re-opening. Also, recataloging tapes doesn't work until they are marked free and unfree again!

If trying to recover from the tape by right clicking->View Contents->Copy, once the job starts, DPM crashes:

>> Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.DB.DBCorruptionException: Couldn't access DataSourceInfo '00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000' in the databaseat Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.PRMCatalog.DataSourceInfo.GetDataSourceInfo(SqlContext ctx, Guid datasourceIdLocal) at Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.PRMCatalog.PrmCatalog.GetDataSourceInfo(Guid datasourceId) at Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.WriterHelper.CommandParamsHelper.GetWriterId() at Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.WriterHelper.CommandParamsHelper.GetSourceCommunicationParameters(Guid taskId, Guid verbId) at Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.WriterHelper.DataTransferCommonTaskHelper.get_SourceCommunicationParameters() at Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.Prm.StartRestoreBlock.MTARestoreDatasetSend(Message msg) at Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.TaskExecutor.Fsm.Transition.Execute(Message msg) at Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.TaskExecutor.Fsm.Engine.ChangeState(Message msg) at Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.TaskExecutor.TaskInstance.Process(Object dummy) at Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.TaskExecutor.FsmThreadFunction.Function(Object taskThreadContextObj) at System.Threading.ExecutionContext.RunInternal(ExecutionContext executionContext, ContextCallback callback, Object state, Boolean preserveSyncCtx) at System.Threading.ExecutionContext.Run(ExecutionContext executionContext, ContextCallback callback, Object state, Boolean preserveSyncCtx)
at System.Threading.QueueUserWorkItemCallback.System.Threading.IThreadPoolWorkItem.ExecuteWorkItem() at System.Threading.ThreadPoolWorkQueue.Dispatch()

Surely, DPM 1801 can't be so broken as to make recovering data after upgrading so iffy??

Alternatively, if there is a way to upgrade from the old database, we could take a look at that, too.

MMC crash when tape backuping

Hi,

I have an problem about DPM Tape Backuping. I have an file sharing server and its size is around 3 TB. When I backuping the server content dpm mmc crashing and backup is failed. ( When 80 percent completed )

My dpm version 5.0.361.0 and there is no problem with backing up servers with fewer sizes ( < 1TB ).

Is it about the size or is there another reason?

DPm 2019 can't see a tape on my second drive

No library . I have 2 drives. Its not the tape. The drive was working fine before reformatting and upgrading to DPM 2019.

One drive can see the tape just fine in DPM. The other Drive can't see squat and just shows up as idle.

Identical setup on another DPm 2019 server with server 2019 standard and the drives work fine.

Microsoft Support just giving me the runaround right now by telling me to erase the tape.

any help would be much appreciated.

Thank You,

Jerry

Tape Labels - DPM Management and Physical

$

This is just a matter of style or need I suppose, but I'm curious how others deal with the tapes they create with the long term backups, how DPM sequential labels them and how they physically label them for later user.  I've been working with DPM for a few years and I'm having a hard time finding a good way to resolve this.  I'd appreciate suggestions.

We currently run 3 protection groups; database, file and email.  The first two are on a 1 week and one month for a year, the later is for six months.  I want to reuses tapes as they expire but I've been running into issues determining which tapes are used, which fail, which have what data on them, etc.  I don't know if one tape will suffice for each protection group.  I haven't been able to label the tapes manually because all three groups have run at the same time.  I've recently changed so each group has a different start time, but they're all still on the weekends.  I suppose I'm not limited to running into interfering with production servers if the tape backups are made from the most recent disk backups in DPM, but staggering them is harder to manage than having everything run at 11pm on a Saturday.

So I've tried to resolve it by viewing each tapes contents and marking their dates and reusing them as they are set to expire, but I've also run into a problem where if say I run a weekend backup for Sept 24, DPM sees the tape was last used on Sept 25th (last year, Saturday) and won't expire it for use yet.  So I almost have to use the tape that expired on the 17th. But then how to label them, by the number?  The date?  The group?  I have them set up something like Email Week or File Month but then you have to know for sure that File Week 34 or Email Month 3 will be free to use when it's needed.

I'm still stuck on the BackupExec method of "put three tapes in, go home."  This is requiring a lot of planning and I'd appreciate any insight on how to better manage it.

Pending Tape Jobs -Are they Weekly or Monthly?

Hello,

We have tape jobs setup for weekly and monthly.  Due to some scheduling conflicts the jobs appear to be overlapping, where both Weekly and Monthly tapes are being written to.

We would like to cancel all the pending WEEKLY jobs.  However, the list of pending tape jobs does not indicate if the job pending is a monthly job or a weekly job.  The only indication is when the tape starts to be written to, the Tape Label (Barcode) field is then populated with our job label.

Is their a way to see if the pending job(s) are a weekly or monthly before it starts to write to tape?

Thank You

DPM 2016 UR4 and Firestreamer

I recently migrated from a DPM 2012 R2 local SQL instance to DPM 2016 UR4 connecting to a separate SQL server and we backup to tape using Firestreamer.  The child server is 2016 running on a 2012 R2 parent.  I am having a repeat problem where the tape backup eventually slows to a stop, all other jobs will stop synchronising etc. and the server in general slows to a crawl.

Restarting the firestreamer service does not do anything

You can't restart any of the DPM services

RAM and CPU usage are normal, however I cannot see disk usage in Performance Monitor, the various sections are blank

Reinstalling Firestreamer works for a few days and then the issues reoccur

It happens across different disk sets.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

DPM 1801 backup to VTL on DR4100 failing at 2TB everytime!

I just stood up my first DPM server running 1801 on a VMware VM, the OS is Server 2016 and SQL 2016 is installed locally. After adding a SAN drive for short term protection, I added a DR4100 dedup appliance as a Virtual Tape Library using the instructions found in the PDF that is linked below.

http://support-public.cfm.quest.com/37814_Microsoft_DPM_-_Setting_Up_the_Dell_DR_Series_System_as_a_VTL_Backup_Target_on_Microsoft_Data_Protection_Manager.pdf

Backups to the VTL have been working perfectly until I tried to back up a 5TB folder on a Server 2012 R2 VM. I have tried to create a recovery point 3 times and each time it fails after transferring 2.04TBs of data. I have pasted the error shown in the console below and it is followed 8 hours later by a "DPM failed to write to tape because the tape is write-protected. (ID 30104 Details: The media is write protected (0x80070013))" error, not sure if this second error is related. Anybody seen this before?

Remove External Tape Tree

Hi Guys,

A few days ago we carried out an exercise where we used a tape created on an older version of DPM 2010 to recover some data using DPM 2012 R2 SP1. The exercise has been successful. However, even after removing the tape we still see the Extenal tape tree in our recovery tab. How should we get it removed?

Thanks,
