Free / Expired / Offsite ready tapes ...

$

Good day to all.

Very new to DPM (former TSM admin here, so don't hold that against me).  Specifics first ...

DPM 2012 R2 running on Windows 2012.

Dell TL4000 tape library with 2 drives and ~40 slots using LTO-5 media (for long term retention)

My biggest question revolves around how DPM manages tapes.  I have 3 tapes listed as 'Expired' under "Offsite Ready" in the console.  Does that mean the entire tape contains data that is past the retention period?  If so, since I'm not using library sharing, I don't need to do anything to make DPM use those tapes, correct?  Is there any harm in marking them as free?

I also have ~20 tapes that are greater than 90% capacity.  Is there any harm in removing them and adding fresh new tapes?  Will DPM try to reuse them at a later date if we remove them and thus cause a job to hold/fail?

How does DPM reconcile tapes?  If I have 20% free space on 15 different tapes, is it possible to consolidate them into the least amount of tapes?  Is this automatic?  Can I force this to happen?

I'm asking these questions because we are constantly having to add new tapes to the library, but I know we aren't using all the tapes to 100% capacity before DPM selects a different tape.

Thanks for your help.

Could not find a valid recovery point on disk. Error 30126 (again)

I read through the article https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c40fa9f4-0162-410b-bb4b-ac4e3c576746/clarification-please-on-what-dpm-could-not-find-a-valid-recovery-point-means?forum=dpmtapebackuprecovery and I would just like clarification and I apologize if the answer is elsewhere, but I didn't find it. I have had the problem with several scheduled tape backups where the majority of machines in a protection group will be backed up to tape and succeed, but there are a few machines where the tape backup fails.  According to the article listed above, there is a mention of only one recovery point being written to tape.  Does this mean that if a tape backup job runs for a protection group  and succeeds, then one of the machines in the protection group is off for a week with no more recovery points created on disk, then when the next weekly tape backup runs, that one machine will fail because there are no new recovery points?  My weekly tape backups are set to expire after three weeks, so I have three sets of weekly tapes.  If that is the case, is there a way around this?  I would like my tape backup jobs to backup whatever the latest recovery point is on disk, whether it is the same recovery point that is already on another tape or not.  Thanks.

I have DPM 2012 R2 with physical and virtual tape libraries, from last few days DPM is unable to write data on Physical Tape Library (Dell ML600). Every time a scheduled backup job runs or if i run it maually or if i try to erase the tape, below mentioned error is generated :

The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: The semaphore timeout period has expired (0x80070079))

Backup jobs on Virtual tape library are running fine, it's just the pysical tape library on which operations are getting failed. Any help regarding this will be higly appreciated !!

DPM 2012 R2 Not Using Expired Tapes

$

We've installed a fresh copy of DPM 2012 R2 on a Windows 2012 R2 server with two HP LTO5 stand-alone tape drives attached.

We've got one set of optimized PG's being backed up long term to one of these drives and one set to the other drive(short term goes to disk).

All of the retention parameters match for all of these PGs in the optimized sets.

The Tape co-location parameters are:

   Write period: 7 days

   Expiry Tolerance: 7 days

We've got two sets of daily backup tapes and the retention range for the backups is 7 days.

We have been running this configuration successfully for about 6 months on this version and on DPM 2010 for longer that that.

Recently - we've been receiving the following error on one of the drives, but not the other(backups on the other drive re-use expired tape and run to completion - no issues):

The back up to tape job failed for the following reason: (ID: 3311) Failed to perform the operation since the tape free tape is not available in Stand Alone Drive Tape Library Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-5 drive-2 (ID: 24050)

The tape inventory of the tape before it's use shows the tape as expired, but each member of the job sits for an hour throws this error and fails

We'll cancel the rest of the pending jobs after several fails and there's always .13MB on the expired tape just used.

if we force free the tape and re-queue the member backups it runs to completion without any issues.

There's no physical errors shown on the tape drive or any of the tapes and searching the logs doesn't show any 8007045D errors at all.

Any Help as to the cause of this would be most appreciated!

Hi

I have EML-E Library With EVA 4400 "Complete Storage & backup Solution Box" a while ago it was working like a charm and it was connected to a physical server with windows server 2008R2Sp1 installed with Symantec backup Exec 20XX.

something went wrong and one of its modules became faulty bottom like we had to disconnect the EML-E for about two years !

during that time the server has been formatted and upgraded to 2012R2 ,due to budget issue we can not buy Symantec anymore but I have DPM 2012R2 license now my question is :

is my library supported by DPM 2012R2 ?  I did some search by myself and found there is a tool by Microsoft to accomplish this task but it require the library be Visible to Device manager witch is not In my case !

here is a screen shoot of device manager :

any Idea ?

Dear All

I used DPM 2012 r2 with SAN Storage for Backup and everything is fine

new Plan from our Company for DR backup is requested for long term so we brining Tape Library (Dell PowerVault TL2000 Tape Library)

so I make New DPM 2012 r2 server as Secondary DPM Server and I do the configuration very well and install the agent in Primary DPM 2012 r2

Tape Library configured very well and tested with dpm backup for some server not protected be primary DPM 2012 r2

after I check everything next step come and it's Protected Primary DPM  2012 r2

and I find the problem

Any server are protected by Primary DPM 2012 r2 cant protected for SHORT TERM

as u see

and next

as u can see Taple for short term not available and no disk ar reserved for this DPM so we can't make backe to any protected server that are protected by Primary DPM

I tested with another server not protected by DPM Server

Tape become available and protected and get replica

Please Need To fixed this issue

I am unable to delete Co-located Protection Group Set in DPM 2012 R2 and it doesn't have any protection groups associated with it. Whenever i try to delete this set it gives error "There are protection groups associated with this set. Please remove them from the set first"

I am able to create and delete new "Co-located Protection Group Sets" but only one set is not getting deleted. Is there any way to do it?

Recovery from imported tape media fails and causes DPM management console to crash with ID: 917

Hi.

I have a newly installed DPM 2012 R2 on a Windows 2012 R2 with a standalone dedicated SQL server which is causing me a bit of a headache right now.

I'm about to restore some files from an imported tape media, the tape is from our previous DPM server (DPM 2010). I have identified the media and cataloged it and i'm able to browse it to choose wich files to restore. But as soon as i try to finish up a restore job it causes the console to crash.

My server is running just fine with backups and restores from i.e tapes that is backed up by this server - no problem there - but imported is not working.

Below is the message from console when it crashes.

Connection to the DPM service has been lost.

Review the application event log for information about a possible service shutdown. Verify that the following services are not disabled:
            DPM
            DPM Replication Agent
            SQLAgent$MSSQLSERVER
            MSSQL$MSSQLSERVER
            Virtual Disk Service
            Volume Shadow Copy

Any ideas?

Tape Library Sharing With Remote SQL Setup

$

Hi there,

I am in the process of setting up five DPM 2012 R2 servers with the intention of using tape library sharing between each of them.  I currently have the DPM servers themselves set up with a remote sql setup.

The servers are configured so that their databases are all on dpmsql-1a with the systems being dpm-1a, dpm-1b, dpm-1c, etc.

On dpmsql-1a, the databases were all set up automatically by the dpm installer with the named dpmdb_dpm_1a, dpmdb_dpm_1b, etc.

So far I've been able to share the library between servers however when I attempt to run the setshareddpmdatabase command, it wants it done in the format of:

setshareddpmdatabase -databasename sqlhost\instance\dpmdb

The problem with that being that the way dpm set things up with the remote sql installation, the databases are actually done as:

dpmsql-1a\dpmdb_dpm_1x

and as such do not have another dpmdb database level below that.

As such, when I attempt to run:

setshareddpmdatabase -databasename dpmsql-1a\dpmdb_dpm_1a

After entering in credentials, I am given an error of:

Failed to execute SharedLibraryValidateGlobalDb.sql on dpmsql-1adpmdb_dpm_1a

Global Shared Database Validation Failed on dpmsql-1adpmdb_dpm_1a . Possible Reasons:
 [1] Incorrect instance name.
[2] The instance does not contain database DPMDB, with schema required for Library Sharing.
 [3] Incorrect username or password.

I've made sure that the firewall is off, the credentials are domain ones and set within the administrators group on each system as other articles have suggested.

Any suggestions?

Identifying Number of Free Tapes to Procure

$

I have recently started a new role and we're using Microsoft DPM 2012 SP1 to manage our backups.  The backups appear to be running fine however on my first inspection I noticed over 30 backup to tape failed errors.

After looking at the errors they are mostly ID 3311 (no free tape) and our latest weekly report has us taking out all of the tapes and putting none in for the next week.  I'm gathering this means we now need to buy some more tapes but I wondered if there's anyway of identifying how many DPM requires.

I've tried to find the answer to this online but my searching skills appear to be failing me.  Could anyone else help with this?

So the job will run for about 2 hours then fail. The only way to get it to finish is to retry the job. Annoying but gets the job done. This has started recently. Starting to wonder if my tapes are going bad or something. Here is the error message Im getting (above). I searched the logs here is what I found

Any ideas ? This is an HP LTO5 MSL 2024 Library. Latest Drive/Chassis firmware. Latest HP Driver.

** Update, ran ERR.EXE -2147023729, I do see some "Out of memory" returns. I wonder, if another job is running and the machine gets low on memory while doing the tape backup? I know windows has memory pressure protection. Wouldn't I see an event ID for that? Currently I'm seeing event ID 15 'The device, \Device\TapeDrive0, is not ready for access yet.' Source 'hplto'

** Update Again ( you guys are too slow) :)

Found this from HP http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=mmr_kc-0100617 going to give it a shot!

Hi all,

the environment is DPM2012 on win 2008r2. all the short term protection working perfectly and once the long term protection configured with tape library, the error comes saying "The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005)) ".

also note the tapes in the library are imported from a dpm 2010 library which was we had earlier.

any body gone through a problem like this?

Thanks

Huge backup - cleaning

$

We have a large volume (60ish TB) that is being written to LTO6 media on an LTO6 drive in an LTO6 library (48 slots).

The backup is taking in the neighborhood of 140ish hours.

95% of the time the drive needs cleaning in the middle of the backup so the backup fails leaving us with useless tapes and 140 wasted hours.

Drive IBM ULTRIUM 6 HH 3580 TAPE DRIVE (1068004921) requires cleaning. The drive will not be used for further operations until it has been cleaned. (ID 25107 Details: The device has indicated that cleaning is required before further operations are attempted (0x8007048D))

Is there a way to pause the backup and clean the drive? Resume the backup once the drive is cleaned? I searched and couldn't find a solution besides clean the drive and try the backup again.

Please help :(

DPM 2012 R2 - ID 2019 Details: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host (0x80072746)

Almost all of our backups are running and completing fine but we have 4 tape job's that will begin to backup then error out at about the same point all the time with the same Error Details (ID 2019 Details: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host (0x80072746)). All 4 tape job's that fail are on the same 2 clustered servers, but we do have 3 job's on the same server cluster that will complete. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

This is a list of our setup:

Single DPM 2012 R2 server running on Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter

2 clustered file servers running Windows 2012 R2 Standard

Data Deduplication is enabled on both file servers

Tape Library is Dell PowerVault TL2000 (LTO5)

Disk storage is Dell PowerVault MD3200 direct attached with about 75TB

HP MSL 2024 with LTO4/LTO6 Drives

I have a single MSL2024 with two drives with on each of LTO4 and LTO6 types. I am trying to use it as a single tape library with both drive types and mixed tables for both LTO4 and LTO6 tapes in the library. I need to restrict the Media Type of the drives to their specific version (LTO3, LTO4 or LTO6). Ideally I want to specific LTO3 and LTO4 media types to the LTO4 drive and the LTO6 media type to the LTO6 drive. When I check the media type of the drives MediaTypesSupported reports LTO_Ultrium and not the specific version of the LTO the drive is.

Is there any way to set the specific versions of the LTO tapes to be used with each drive?

I am trying to avoid have 2 virtual libraries within the MSL2024, which would make two libraries in DPM. I believe in this configuration I would only be able to use a single Library for the Protection group and not be able to use either.

Thanks, Mike

write protection error

Hi,

I am attempting to run tape backups from DPM 2010 to a Dell Powervault 124T with an LTO4 drive.  Other backup software seems to write to the tapes fine, but DPM always gives the following error on multiple tapes:

The tape  (000110L4) (barcode - 000110L4) present in the Tape Library Dell (tm) PowerVault (tm) 124T Autoloader is write-protected. (ID 30003 Details: The media is write protected (0x80070013))

I have physically checked the tapes and the write protect switch is not set to protected.  DPM will erase the tapes with no errors.

Does anyone have any hints?
