Different retention policies for two different tape libraries.

Greetings,

It would be great if we could use different retention periods for two different tape libraries in DPM.

Our security policy does not let us to use Azure.

We keep 5 days of 30 min backups locally on DAS.

We keep 30 days of daily backups on virtual tape library.

We keep 7 years of monthly backups on physical tape library offsite.

But currently, the only way of sending the data to physical tape is to configure a 7 year retention goal on virtual tape library with a copy job going to physical tape, so we have to manually remove backups from virtual tape library.

It would be nice to be able to tell to DPM, in layman's terms: "Do backups from disk to virtual tape library and keep them for 30 days and, once a month, do backups from disk to physical tape, and keep them for 7 years."

We really hope that this will be made available.

External DPM Tapes tab disappears after some time

Hey.
I have 2strange problemswith the tapes onDPM2012R2UR8. I'm tryingimporta some tapesfrom anotherDPM2012R2 server.

1. Afterimporting the tapes I get an ExternalDPM Tapes tab.But the items thatis in it disappear/ was replaced ,afterimporting another tape. Until after sometime, the whole tab disappears.


2. After importing some of the tapes, in the External DPM Tapes tab, datewith copieslocatedon tapedo not appear in.When I check the tape preview I received anbackup from the relevant date. I will only add thatthey are large backups that are usuallyon multipletapes.


Has anyone already encountered such problems,orhave an idea how can I find out what causes them?

DPM 2012 R2, tape recovery points showing incorrectly

hi everyone,

I'm expiriencing a problem with tape backup. On 1 February, a monthly backup was occured; due to the protection group settings, retention range must be 6 Months, however, the expiration date for these tape recovery points have been set to 1/2/2018. I have a "recovery goal 3", which have a retention range 24 Months; however, the half-yearly backup should be run only every 1 Jan and Jul.

Recently, I've upgraded to UR9. Has anyone the same problem after this update? the protection group settings are correct.

Cannot Erase Tape after R2 upgrade

Hi

I have recently upgraded MS DPM2012 SP1 to 2012 R2.

I am now faced with the error below :

Affected area: -
Occurred since: 2/18/2016 9:55:58 AM
Description: The detailed inventory of tape failed for the following reason: (ID 3316)
 The tape in Stand Alone Drive Tape Library IBM ULT3580-TD5 SCSI Sequential Device at Drive IBM ULT3580-TD5 SCSI Sequential Device has been written to by another tape backup application using an unsupported physical block size. DPM supports a physical block of 65536 bytes for writing and a physical block size ranging from 1024 bytes to 65536 bytes for reading. So DPM will not be able to read or overwrite the contents of this tape. (ID 24084 Details: When accessing a new tape of a multivolume partition, the current block size is incorrect (0x80070452))

the freetape.ps1 fails to read the media.

I read about a utility name mytape.exe that can erase the tape, but i can't find it anywhere.

Can someone please help?

Using DPM 2012 with a VTL and Tape Library

We are using DPM 2012 SP1 with a HP StoreOnce VTL and a HP MSL tape library. We wanted to use the VTL for the short term protection and the tape library for long term protection. I noticed in DPM you can not specify a specific library to use for just short term protection or long term protection. Anyone else doing this or have any thoughts on this. Thanks.

Find Total Space used by All Tapes in DPM

I have put together a PS script that pulls all of the tapes for active protection groups.  In SQL, I found a view that shows me every tape DPM knows about.  What I am looking for is a way to see the space used on all tapes.  Some inactive members still have RP on tapes as some of the retentions are 5 years.  Does anyone know another view, table, or something I can do in PS to get this list of all tapes, their consumed space, etc?  Thanks in advance.

DPM 2012 does not see slots in IBM TotalStorage 3573 Tape Library

I have installed DPM 2012 on a Windows 2012 R2 server and it has a SAS connected Dell TL2000 tape library.  I have installed the drivers for the drive and library but DPM only shows "Library: IBM TotalStorage 3573 Tape Library" and underneath it it shows Drives and there is an "IBM ULTRIUM 5 HH 3580 TAPE DRIVE".  There are no slots appearing even though there are 23 available.

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers but this does not work.  I have installed them from the command prompt (install_exclusive.exe) but still the slots are not appearing.  They appear to be working in the device manager and appear as above.  I have tried changing the Medium Changer to "unknown" but this makes it disappear in DPM altogether.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience of this issue and if so I would be most grateful of any advice.

DPM 2012 SP1 and copy library

I am running DPM 2012 SP1 with a HP StoreOnce VTL and a HP MSL 4048 tape library. I want to use the VTL for short term protection and the tape library for long term protection. I have setup a Protection Group to backup to the VTL as the Library and the tape library as the Copy Library. I noticed on the Friday backup the Protection job backed up to both the VTL and the tape library and there are two tape sets. Is this built into DPM to do this on a Friday backup?

How Do I Add Slots To a VTL within DPM 2012

Hi Our regular DPM administrator is off ill and I've been given the task to maintain it just now. One of the jobs to a library is failing as it requires new tapes. Currently, the VTL has two drives with 24 slots. Can anyone please advise me how do I add slots as I am aware you require more slots before being able to add new tapes (there are 24 tapes there just now)?

Copy an entire tape from on library to another.

I have a HP StoreOnce virtual tape library that I use for my daily backups. I want to be able to useCopy-DPMTapeData to copy an entire tape from the VTL to a MSL tape library. Is it possible to copy an entire tape using  Copy-DPMTapeData ?

Long term tape backup behavior

Hi,

We intend to use long term tape backup with tape out at offsite.

Assuming that we have 2 sets of tapes and retention of 1 year. This will result in alternate months of data at onsite and offsite at any given time.

Colocation will be used, so based on my understanding the write period must expire at 1 month to achieve offsite ready at the end of every month.

After tape out to offsite and returned back to the Tape library with the previously set write period expired, can the tape be appended  with the new month's data without overwriting the previous months' backup that is still within the retention period?

DPM 2012 R2 U9 - Protection Group Job Not Using Second Drive

Running DPM 2012 R2 U9 in a two-server environment, one physical APP server with 22 TB local storage and a Quantum Scalar i80 four-drive LTO-5 library and one SQL 2012 DB server.

Created a protection group to backup files from a file cluster to both the local disk for short term and tape for long term.  Have allocated 2 drives in the PG for the job. 

Two issues:

- Even though the job has two drives allocated, it is only using one.

- Server seems to be backing up extremely slow, even for an LTO-5 drive.

DPM 2012 R2 backup to disk but not to tape

Hello,

I've a strange problem that started to happen last week. During the week the backup is made to disk, and every saturdays, the backup is made to tape. But this last weekend the tape backup didn't start, I've tried to do it manually, but did'nt work too.

Some steps I made:

- DPM server reboot

- stop and start DPM Services

-  I've installed the rollup 9 and reboot the DPM server, still not working.

- I've checked the Tape Library, and it's ok, because i can clean a tape.

Someone has any idea how to solve this issue?

DPM 2012 R2 - Using DPM Software compression and Tape Hardware Encryption

I am aware that DPM 2012 r2 is unable to do software compression and encryption on the server together. However, does DPM 2012 R2 allow for admins to complete the data compression within the DPM application and have the tape hardware complete the encryption?

We have no way of validating this solution, unless we purchase the hardware key for $1600 dollars.

Any thought on how we can get the best of both worlds (Compression/Encryption)?

DPM 2012 SP1 certificate stores gone after in upgrade to Server 2012 R2

I took a test DPM server (DPM 2012 SP1, fully patched) and upgraded the underlying OS from Server 2012 to 2012 R2 (RTM / MSDN)

The DPM certificate stores were gone so my tape backups fail.

How to avoid this, get them back and so on?

Configure DPM long-term backup on virtual tape library

 Hi all,

How can we configure a Virtual Tape Library (VTL) which is a software/appliance that can simulate the tape library with DPM 2012 R2 so that we have long-term backup?

After searching I found that Virtual tape libraries configured with a virtual fibre channel adapter are supported if you’re running Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 UR3 or later with certified hardware and FireStreamer software can be used to emulate this but I am looking for full documentation on this, can you help me please?

Hello

I would like to have assistant for this problem, here is a brief description of the DPM layout.

I have 2 DPM servers version (4.0.1920), Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, SQL 2008 R2 Sp2 for each DPM server.

I have performed all tasks required  to share a tape library HP2024 as in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh758124.aspx   

There where already protection groups created on both servers. On the defined Share tape Server the groups where using the the tape for long term.

Also reviewed some of the steps in http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2011/12/20/how-to-troubleshoot-tape-library-sharing-configuration-issues-in-dpm-2010.aspx , and checked many other links and blogs but info related to DPM 2012 is insufficient.

No errors appear during the configuration and the logs on the "...\dpm\temp" have not been very helpful.

I can open the console on the client, but when i press the "management", the console is not able to read the DB.



Does the setup of the Sharing, requires the PG to have no tape configured, or even no PG setup at all?

How i may solve this issue?

DPM 2012 Sp1 Not Write on Tape

Good day,
I have for weeks problems with DPM 2012 Sp1 and an Overland tape drive IBM Utr. 3580 Drive.
I have installed the drive, as Overland in a data sheet specifies the appropriate drivers.
However, I can not write my drives to tape, I always get the error "The I / O bus was reset 0x80070457".
I have the original driver "LTO Tape Drive" also tried and this brought no success.

Tape Parameters to Increase Throughput

I am using DPM 2012 with a Quantum i80 and two IBM LTO6 drives fiber connected at 8GB to the DPM server through a dedicated 8GB Brocade fiber switch.  I have confirmed that the drives and the server are connected at 8GB and that we are using Microsoft LTO drivers for the tape drives.

I am getting miserable performance out of the combination, even on large application (database) files.  Currently, we average between 25 and 50 GB per hour.

When I load IBM's testing utility (and therefore IBM's drivers) I am able to get expected performance from the drives running on the same server and through the same connections.

I can not run IBM's drivers with DPM or I get Access Denied when attempting to write to the drives.

Is there anything that can be tweaked to increase the performance of these drives with DPM?
